In order to get the most out of your Choosing Leadership workshop, there is a small amount of preparation. We have three quick activities, all designed for you to get to know yourself better, in particular, to help us learn where we can best tap into your leadership potential. By acting on these activities, you are choosing to develop your leadership! Each activity takes about 10-20 minutes, so you can complete all three in less than an hour.
Core Values Exercise
“Integrity is choosing courage over comfort; it’s choosing what is right over what is fun, fast, or easy; and choosing to practice our values rather than simply professing them.”
Brene Brown, Rising Strong
Do the core values exercise. There are several similar exercises out there. This is a multi-step process to get down to 5 core values and takes about 5-10 minutes.
Interest Inventory
“Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.”
Oprah Winfrey
Complete the O*NET Interest Profiler. Once complete, be sure to save or print out your results report. You do not need to explore job zones or careers at this point. This interest inventory is based on the Holland Code system. Holland Codes are abbreviated RIASEC and refer to John Holland’s six personality types: Realistic (R), Investigative (I), Artistic (A), Social (S), Enterprising (E) and Conventional (C). You should receive a score for each of those areas. Completing the online profiler should take 10-15 minutes as long as you don’t explore job zones or careers. Understanding your interests is the important component in this exercise.
Motivated Skills Card Sort
“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.”
John F. Kennedy
You will receive a link in the email you provided when registering for this workshop. Use that link to do the Motivated Skills Card Sort online. Look for an email with the subject “PaLA Choosing Leadership: Link To Motivated Skills” from ‘support@careerplanner.com’ You can also watch a video tutorial that shows you how you can sort your skills. This will be the longest of the exercises but can be completed in about 15-20 minutes.
